"Edward" by Anonymous

Line 21:
O I have killed my father dear . . .
Holy cow, this was a difficult poem! So, Edward kills his father, but I don't get the feeling that he is remorseful. For one thing, when he is trying to cover up what he's done, he says he has killed one of his animals. Essentially, he is comparing his father to an animal. For another thing, he only actually says he is sad once, in line 24: "alas, and woe is me, O". And for some reason- I don't know is this is right or not- I got the feeling that he was being a bit sarcastic or just feigning sadness to seem the a remorseful person. I read it as, "I killed my dad. Boo-hoo." Now, I am not sure if I got this exactly right, but I think what happens next is his mother starts to basically interrogate him in a sly way. So while he thinks she is giving him advice and being a caring mother, she is really trying to learn his plan so she can alert the authorities of what he has done and where they can find him. I could have gotten that wrong, but that's how I read it.

So he kills his father then decides to abandon his family and thereby force them to become beggars. Basically, this Edward guy is a horrible person.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
