Brave New World--- Nine

Quote from pg. 144:
Then suddenly he found himself reflecting that he had only to take hold of the zipper at her neck and give one long, strong pull . . . He shut his eyes, he shook his head with the gesture of a dog shaking its ears as it emerges from the water.
Ah, to be young and in love! Well, this simile paints an excellent portrait of the inner conflict that John is facing. Like most of today's teenagers, he is confronted by lustful temptations. Since he grew up in the Reservation where fornication is heavily frowned upon, he feels guilty for these emotions and tries to ignore them. This seems to be a bit of foreshadowing. Maybe he gives into temptation; maybe not. Whatever the case, I'm sure this will lead to some external conflict between Lenina and John.

Also, I noticed a connection between Linda and Bernard in the tenth chapter. The DHC calls Bernard a heretic because of the "unorthodoxy of his sexlife"- he prefers intimate relationships. Yet when Linda follows her conditioning and sleeps with almost every man on the Reservation, she is shunned by the other women. This just emphasizes the deep contrast between the values taught in these two places.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
