Brave New World--- Seventeen

Quote from page 235:
. . . People believe in God because they've been conditioned to believe in God."
"But all the same," insisted the Savage, 'it is natural to believe in God when you're alone-- quite alone, in the night, thinking about death . . ."
I found this chapter to be quite enjoyable, for the external conflict between John and Mustapha reflects  an inner conflict of my own. Raised as a Catholic, I was taught that there is a God and that we must love him unconditionally and serve him in all we do. As a young adult, I have often questioned the truth in this statement. I accept that there probably is a God; what I question is if I've only believed in his existance because of conditioning or because of an inner desire to please my creator.

I also find it interesting the extent to which John dragged his argument that God is the reason for all things good. Mustapha makes it clear that civilized people have no need for God. They have no desires that need fulfilling, no sins to forgive, no hardships they need assistance in facing. In spite of Mustapha's valid points, John continues to believe that God is necessary for society.

In addition, I found it strange that John continues to try to fight for a society that he hates.

Until next time,
Alysse
