Brave New World--- Six

Quote from Pg. 96-97:
"Don't imagine," he said, "that I'd had any indecorous relation with the girl. Nothing emotional, nothing longdrawn. It was all perfectly healthy and normal." He handed Bernard the permit. "I really don't know why I bored you with this trivial anecdote." Furious with himself for having given away a discreditable secret, he vented his rage on Bernard.
Ironically enough, this is not just a trivial anecdote; that's pretty clear from the Director's actions. He's not a very good liar. Something happened on the Reservation that he's not sharing with Bernard. Maybe he actually had feelings for this woman beyond the norm, or maybe he left her there for some reason. In any case, something important is going to happen at the Reservation.

This could be an example of foreshadowing as well. It's possible that Bernard loses Lenina while with the Indians. Also, I have a strange feeling they may meet the girl that the Director lost. Just a thought . . .

I think the fact that Bernard is going to be fired and sent to Iceland will be crucial to the development of the plot and also his character. It's a chance for him to stand up for himself and, if there's no hope for him to stay, to shake things up in his wake. If he's leaving anyway, he may as well try to mess up the carefully calculated conditioning of society. That's what I would do- leave with a BANG!

Until next time,
Alysse
