"The Joy of Cooking" by Elaine Magarrell

Okay, what is with all these depressing and weird poems??

So, I take it the speaker does not like the brother and the sister, or at least does not like certain aspects of them. "Sister's tongue . . . it will probably grow back" most likely suggests the sister talks too much or is a gossip. "Brother's heart barely feeds two" suggests the brother is a Grinch; his heart is two sizes too small. It is "rather dry" and "needs . . . stuffing to make it interesting at all" suggests the brother is boring and emotionless. The fact that it "resembles muscle more than organ meat" could suggest he is all brawn and no brain. Also, it could mean he is more interested in good looks than what is on the inside, though that is a little less likely I would say.

Does the speaker think of himself or herself as perfection? I understand that siblings can become annoying somethimes, but I would never go so far as to say I was going to cut out my brother's heart and cook it, even if I meant it figuratively. Is there something I am not getting here? Or is the speaker really just being that dramatic?

Until Next Time,
Alysse
