The first major thing I noticed from this poem was the pun on "stuff" in the sixth stanza. The first "stuff" in context is more of a figure of speech meaning that the speaker is done working; he is fed up. The second "stuff" in context is the things that dreams are made on- specifically his dreams. I would definitely call the speaker unmotivated and maybe even lazy. I mean, he refers to work as a toad and as poison! He talks about how he wants to become a bum- "lots of folks live up lanes with fires in a bucket"- and do nothing with his life. He even says "they seem to like it"; clearly, Ritchie Rich here has never been homeless or talked to a homeless person. Anyway, he speaks of two toads in his life. The first is clearly work- "the toad work". Now, I could be toad-aly (get it?) off in my thinking here, but I feel like the second toad is the speaker himself. He does say "something sufficiently toad-like squats in me, too".
Until Next Time,
Alysse
