"The Drunkard" by Frank O'Connor

Quote from page 351:
"My brave little man!" she said with her eyes shining. "It was God did it you were there. You were his guardian angel."
There is so much irony in this story! The kid goes with his father to prevent him from drinking, and then the kid ends up getting drunk. Then the kid's drunkenness brings more shame to the family than if he had just let his father drink. Now everyone thinks his parents (or at least his father) are neglectful and just plain awful for raising their son to drink excessively. Why would the mother praise the kid for bringing more shame to their family? But then again I suppose she could be praising him because she thinks now the father will no longer drink. While the kid may have brought shame, he saved the family from years more of shame caused by the father's drinking habits. However, he was not exactly "innocent" as his mother said on page 351: " . . .The road knows the way you filled your unfortunate innocent child with drink to make sport for you and that other rotten, filthy brute". The kid chose to drink the beer to see what it tasted like. He wasn't being noble or self-sacrificing; he was just curious.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
