Cars slushed by on the street outside, where it was getting dark. But it was getting dark on the inside too. There are so few details about the setting of this story, but the details that are given are key to the plot. In the example above, the growning darkness outside parallels the darkness inside. This darkness on the inside is not simply the lack of light inside the house but also the darkness of the relationship. The "snow melting into dirty water" also symbolizes the degeneration of the relationship. Additionally, paragraph 26 reveals another important detail: "In the scuffle they knocked down a flowerpot that hung behind the stove". I could be pushing the limits of the cone of meaning here, but I thought maybe this symbolizes the way the couple gave up on the relationship. It shows the progression from a thing of beauty to something that is no longer worth maintaining. They destroy it by not caring enough.
Until Next Time,
Alysse
