Never Let Me Go--- Eight

Quote from Pg. 100:
Then somehow we'd got onto the subject of boys, and she'd said, not looking up from her work:
"And Tommy. I knew it wouldn't last with Ruth. Well, I suppose you're the natural successor."
Once again, Tommy and Kathy are matched up! Not only does Cynthia E. say it here, but Hannah basically says the same thing a day or two later. Kathy herself says it makes sense for her to date Tommy since she had "been Tommy's friend until all this couples stuff had come up" (pg. 100). I feel that Kathy really likes Tommy deep down, but she is too much of a people-pleaser to take advantage of this opportunity. I feel that Kathy is always putting others, especially Ruth, before herself; that may be why she is such a good carer.

I also think Ruth is deliberately keeping Tommy and Kathy apart. My evidence can be found on page 104:
"Yeah, and he really respects you. I know because he's often talked about it. How you've got guts and how you always do what you say you're going to do. He told me once if he was in a corner, he'd rather have you backing him than any of the boys" . . .
Ruth can see that Tommy likes Kathy, and she can probably see that Kathy likes Tommy, too. Maybe they don't know it yet, or maybe they just both don't want to admit it. Whatever the case may be, Ruth is keeping them apart; I just can't figure out why.

I've also found evidence to "prove" Tommy's feelings for Kathy on page 110:
"I do realise that, Kath. That's exactly why I can't rush back into it with Ruth. We've got to think about the next move really carefully." Then he sighed and looked right at me. "Like you say, Kath. We're going to be leaving here soon. It's not like a game anymore. We've got to think carefully."
This at least proves that Tommy was reconsidering his relationship with Ruth and having a mental debate about pursuing his feelings for Kathy. Oh, Love Triangle, must you be a part of every story?

Until Next Time,
Alysse
