It never occurred to me that our lives, until then so closely interwoven, could unravel and separate over a thing like that.This is a great example of an implied metaphor. Ishiguro uses words like "interwoven" and "unravel" to compare Ruth, Tommy, and Kathy's relationship to thread. It's a commonly known fact that thread is very weak and can be easily broken; my Vans (which now have giant holes in them) are proof enough, let alone my countless cheap tee shirts that have come apart at the seams. Writers often compare human relationships to the fragile thread- I've been known to do it myself- and it's a fitting comparison. Ishiguro seems to be very good at making this story (which, I remind you, is the story of cloned people who are made for the sole purpose of becoming organ donors) surprisingly accessible and relatable. He puts Kathy into real-life situations and gives the characters normal characteristics, making them all the more believeable.
The ending of Part II was rather sad, but a bit ironic, as shown in this quote from pg. 203:
But I kept a certain distance from her, just as I did from Tommy. We didn't really talk properly again at the Cottages, and before I knew it, I was saying my goodbyes.We know that Kathy will meet her friends again, but at that time, she did not. So I guess this would be dramatic irony. I don't know why she wouldn't try to fix things before she left. If I got into a fight with someone I was about to leave for a long time, I would try to set things right before it was too late. Maybe she thought it wasn't worth the trouble since she wouldn't see them again.
