Then suddenly- right in mid-sentence, apparently- Miss Emily had broken off from talking about Beethoven and announced that Miss Lucy had left Hailsham and wouldn't be returning.Woo-hoo! My hypothesis was right! Miss Lucy left Hailsham! (Is it sad that that was the highlight of my day today? Rhetorical question; please don't answer that.)
While Miss Lucy leaving Hailsham makes sense, the impact of that event on Tommy and Ruth's relationship does not. Tommy was considering the possibility of a relationship with Kathy, but he changes his mind after Miss Lucy leaves. I understand that he should be sad, but why should it affect his love life?
I'm hoping Part II of the novel explains things that were left open to interpretation in Part I. For example, I still don't know exactly what the purpose of their art is; I only know that it has something to do with Madame's Gallery. I also don't know if Miss Lucy left because of her own guilt or if she was asked to leave (though I'm leaning towards the latter). I don't know why Ruth is keeping Tommy and Kathy apart. And- this one is really random- I still don't really understand how the carer/donor process gets started.
Maybe I'm just confused because it is late.
Until Next Time,
Alysse
