I was never sure if Ruth had actually invented the secret guard herself, but there was no doubt she was the leader. There has been a lot of indirect characterization in this book. Though Kathy states that Ruth was the leader of the guard, it is assumed that she is the general leader of their group of friends. This is a fact proven by events mentioned in previous chapters where the others turn to Ruth to decide things for them. Also, Ruth seems bossy and a bit of a social climber, but she seems to care for her friends. She also is a bit naive, always taking things too far, truly believing things that are just stories or games. This makes her seem immature, which is ironic because the other girls look to her as a source of wisdom. Ruth seems to be a bit of a chronic liar (exemplified by the chess story and the pencil case story). This only adds to her immaturity and makes her seem like a stark contrast to Kathy, who usually behaves maturely for her age.
Continuing with something I mentioned briefly in my last blog, I still have not found a real physical description of Kathy, Ruth, or Tommy. So I have taken the liberty to create what I think they look like through a lovely website called ToonDoo. Please note that they are in cartoon form, so it's not ideal, but it's alright for now. Also, I had some technical difficulties with the website . . . so the individual pictures will be closer to how I picture the characters. The image of all three is just more awesome.
Until next time,
Alysse
