"Marie-Claude is correct," Miss Emily said, "I'm the one to whom you should be speaking."TWIST! Miss Emily reappears in the story, along with the depressing- yet slightly anticipated- news that deferrals do not exist. I was thinking that Madame would refuse them because Tommy never had art in her Gallery, but this makes for a much deeper plot.
Ishiguro is a pretty talented writer to be able to pen a story with so many underlying themes and make it into a love story somehow. I was so encapsulated by Tommy and Kath's story, I almost forgot what else the book was about (because God forbid a book be written for pure entertainment). I would have to say that the first thing I noticed concerning underlying messages would be this quote from page 264:
Our little movement, we were always too fragile, always too dependent on the whims of our supporters. So long as the climate was in our favour, so long as a corporation or a politician could see a benefit in supporting us, then we were able to keep afloat.I think this may be Ishiguro's way of saying, in general terms, that important causes are often lost causes because they are too dependent on the people supporting them.
Another main theme I found was that while people come and go, memories last a lifetime. I also hold to my allegory theory (that the students represent mankind as a whole, one day destined to die) and believe that Ishiguro is saying that there is a reason to live, if only for those moments where we feel truly alive, truly loved. In addition, there is that twisted morals/scientific exploitation theme like in Brave New World.
All in all, it was a good, interesting book. I loved Ishiguro's style of foreshadowing, and he often described things through metaphors and similes (which is often how I describe things as well).
Now that I'm finished with my blogs and there are only three days left of summer, it has occurred to me that I am in no way, shape, or form ready for school to begin again. I miss summer already.
Until Next Time (though there probably won't be a next time unless we continue these blogs during the school year),
Alysse
Oh, don't worry. We'll continue with blogs all year long!
ReplyDeleteOutstanding work, Alysse.
