Mortified as I was at his behavior, and resolved as I had been to dismiss him when I entered my office, nevertheless I strangely felt something superstitious knocking at my heart, and forbidding me to carry out my purpose, and denouncing me for a villian if I dared to breathe one bitter word against this forlornest of mankind. From this one quote, I can see two totally differing characteristics of Bartleby that seem equally plausible. For one thing, I see Bartleby as frail; the narrator feels bad for him. But on the other hand, I could see Bartleby being kind of intimidating to the narrator because he doesn't do anything that he asks and doesn't seem to care about the consequences. I would also say Bartleby is stubborn and a bit childish since he refuses to do anything extra, then later refuses to do anything at all. For the most part he was consistent. He did his copying, no matter what time it was, and though he did nothing else asked of him, he was consistent in his answer. Bartleby is just an all-around weird dude. I mean, he refused to leave the office, even after the narrator moved his business. Also, if I read the story correctly, he would often just stand there and stare at nothing when he wasn't copying. Bartleby is by far the strangest character I've ever known. And I still have no definitive answers about him.
Until Next Time,
Alysse
