A Rose For Emily by William Faulkner

Quote from pg 281:
When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to the funeral . . .
The structure of this story completely affected the way I received the story. For one thing, it is told in with a first person PLURAL narrator. This is something I've really never seen before, so it really stood out to me. It seems as though this story is told by all of the townspeople, and not just because of the plural narrator(s). The stories that are told come from many different generations; decades pass between the stories. Clearly, since the stories are told as though the speaker is a firsthand witness of all these events, there has to be more than one person telling this story. It seems as if this is a collection of all the town gossip about Miss Emily. The fact that the story is not told in chronological order enhances this. It feels like they are all at her wake, sharing crazy Miss Emily stories. Also, none of the questions brought on by the stories have conclusive answers, making the gossip feeling even stronger.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
