This is what a person's hand looks like after it got burned by lye. Imagine what it did to this kid's throat. I seriously doubt he is still living. But I think the more important fact is that Phoenix thinks he is alive still, or at least, she behaves as if he is. It seems the nurse is trying to prompt her to admit he has died; the nurse is trying to help Phoenix move on with her life. I think her grandson's death may have done something to her psyche; it reminds me of in "Miss Emily" when she cannot admit that her father has died.
Mr. Costello, why are all of the stories that you assigned for this unit completely depressing?
