Mr. Kapasi observed it too, knowing that this was the picture of the Das family he would preserve forever in his mind.Wow, this story was ironic. Mr. Kapasi is an interpreter, and yet the whole story is filled with misinterpretations. Mr. Kapasi thinks Mrs. Das is interested in him when she is really only out for personal gain; Mrs. Das believes that Mr. Kapasi is a real doctor when really he only translates for one.
I think the last line-the quote above- of the entire story sums up how Mr. Kapasi's outlook has changed. In the beginning, he imagined this beautiful picture of him with Mrs. Das, in love and with a perfect life and family. By the end of the story, he realizes that this will never be more than a fantasy. He believes now that the image of a perfect family is a false one. The picture Mr. Kapasi is about to take will be a picture of forced smiles. He realizes that the true image is the one he is viewing at that very second, the one with indifference and lies. He basically gives up on the idea of love.
Random question I'd like to pose here: Does Mr. Das know- either consciously or subconsciously- that Bobby is not his child? Because I've noticed he treats him differently than his other son . . .
Until Next Time,
Alysse
