"Everyday Use" by Alice Walker

Quote from page 173:
She thinks her sister has held life always in the palm of one hand, that "no" is a word the world never learned to say to her.
There is a stark contrast between the narrator's two daughters. While Dee has alway had everything given to her, Maggie has kind of been neglected. Moreover, Dee is completely ungrateful. For example, page 175 says, "She had hated that house that much". She was never thankful for the roof over her head and always thought she deserved better. On the contrary, Maggie is grateful for the little she has and does not complain when she does not get her way. When the whole quilt debacle is going on, Maggie acts like the adult and willingly gives up what is hers. Dee acts like the child and throws a small temper tantrum. Maggie is just an all around better person, despite how great Dee thinks her education makes her.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
