"Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield

Quote from pg 186:
But when she put the lid on she thought she heard something crying.
I think a small theme in this story is that we're not as important and cool as we think we are. Miss Brill thought she had this big role in the theater production called life. She wore this fur necklet thinking it made her look sofisticated and fancy. But in reality, people laughed at her necklet and really did not even care if she was there or not. The couple at the end of the story wonder aloud why Miss Brill is even there, and they talk about her right in front of her as if she is not even there.

Also, I think detachment is running theme throughout the story. Miss Brill is people-watching for most of the story; she is a quiet observer. She never becomes involved, and she mostly does not talk to the people she sees. In the last line (in the quote above) I saw a bit of emotional detachment from her own self and her own emotional situation. Miss Brill is crying and doesn't even realize she was doing so.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
