The chaplain had sinned, and it was good. Why is everything so weird in this book? Sin is good. Insane people aren't released. Life is better inside the hospital. The chaplain- a "man of God"- is not sure if he believes in God anymore. Everything is opposite of what it normally is. Now, this seemed odd to me at first. Then I developed a theory as to why Heller would make everything so . . . abnormal. This is a little outside the cone of meaning, but perhaps Heller was using this as a way to show that the world of war is different from our world in every way. They live by a different rulebook. And once I started to look at these things from a new perspective, I started to see that they aren't that odd for those inside a war. Insane people fight because sane people wouldn't start wars to begin with. Everyone should doubt God after seeing all the horrible things these men have seen. It really makes perfect sense.
Until next time,
Alysse
I don't think you are outside the cone of meaning at all!
