Catch-22: understatement

Quote from page 44:
Luckily, the war broke out just in the nick of time . . .
Chief White Halfoat says how thankful he is for the war, and he is not alone. Doc Daneeka mentions that the war was a blessing for him, and though none of the higher-ranking officers explicitly say it, one can tell by their actions that war is something they love. All of their sentiments towards the war seem to downplay the true horror of war. This could be a reflection of the average WWII-era American, who viewed the war as the end to all the troubles of the Great Depression. This view is askew and warps the reality of war. Yossarian is the voice of reason; he is the only one who is not grateful for the war. He despises it and tries in every possible way to avoid going on missions. Yossarian has watched a friend disappear and had another die in his arms; he knows the truth about war.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
