Frankenstein--- characterization

quote from pg 135:
Ever since my recovery from the fever, I had been in the custom of taking every night a small quantity of laudanum . . .
Made clear by his studies, Victor is an intelligent and determined person. However, the quote above and several other instances in the novel have lead me to believe that he's kind of a wimp. First of all, he runs away from nearly every problem he faces. Second, as can be seen in the quote above, he gets sick all the time! I suppose Shelley is trying to convey a sense of sympathy. The reader is supposed to see his horror, sorrow, and grief; the reader is supposed to see this characterization of a tragic hero. However, I feel little sympathy for Victor. I feel more sympathy for the creature, even though he is the murderer! Through the frame story setup, the reader was able to see the creature's perspective and gain some sympathy for him. Shelley characterizes him as a bit of a tragic hero as well. The creature began life innocent, and humans corrupted, detested, and abandoned him.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
