I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. One of the themes in this book is nature vs. nurture. Victor seems to think that the creature- or Cornelius, as 1st period has named him- is inherently evil. On page 35, Victor says that "breathless horror and disgust filled my heart" immediately after the creation. As soon as Cornelius opens his eyes, Victor immediately is ashamed of him. He later assumes that Cornelius was William's murderer without any tangible proof!
On the other hand, Cornelius shows the reader that he was not born evil. As he hints in the quote above, some unfortunate event changed him. The reader can see through the way he helps the family that he is nice and good. Evil people do not view other peoples' happiness "with pleasure" (pg 78). My guess is that the family rejects him, and that changes him.
Until Next Time,
Alysse
