Catch-22: theme

Quote from pg 440:
"Man was matter, that was Snowden's secret. Drop him out of a window and he'll fall. Set fire to him and he'll burn.
One of the major themes I found in this novel was the inevitability of death. The mortality of man is apparent in all the deaths displayed throughout the story, but it is especially present in Snowden's death. This theme connects to another theme in this book: the power of the ruling force. The men in the squadron have no control over their lives. They do not decide when they die; they are at the whim of their commanding officers. Yossarian is the character who is most aware of both his mortality and his absolute powerlessness. He seeks ways to remedy this and ultimately decides to run away. He is paranoid, constantly thinking of death, and suspicious of everyone. However, some good comes from his awareness. He experiences life to its fullest, "falls in love" often, and understands how precious life is.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
