Catch-22: style

Quote from pg 268:
It was neither deja vu, presque vu nor jamais vu.
Heller has a way of suspending the natural progression of time that reflects the chaplain's feelings in this quote. Many events in the book are repeatedly described from differing points of view or with new information added to it. This gives the reader new understanding after each description. It is almost like looking at a piece of abstract art and noticing something new every time. Heller's style of storytelling is circular and repetitive. Events do not occur in chronological order, and characters often appear to return to the same situation multiple times. Also, the repetition of certain humorous dialogues or events reveals something more serious behind the humor. For example, when Orr and Yossarian speak about the woman hitting Orr over the head, it is comical how annoyed Yossarian gets. Later, Yossarian realizes why she was hitting him over the head (because he was paying her to), and the audience sees a more serious implication behind what was previously assumed to be funny.

Until Next Time,
Alysse
